Growing up, Peter's family had a classic luncheonette in Beacon, NY, a true family establishment started by his grandfather and later run by his father. Charkalis’ Restaurant was styled like a classic 1950s diner, complete with soda fountains and hand-pumped syrups. That’s where his grandfather first introduced him to Cherry Cola, made the old-fashioned way: cola syrup mixed with soda water, stirred quickly with a long spoon. On special days, he’d add a scoop of vanilla ice cream — pure magic.
